A longtime resident of the Pacific Northwest, I have naturally been captivated by the splendid vistas that we all enjoy. As an avid backpacker, I have found a natural connections between landscape photography and watercolor painting. What starts in the field can be finished in the studio, where my penchant for detail can be pursued at my own leisure.
My technique in watercolor painting reflects my original training in oil painting. I use dry brushing as a way to generate the nuances in the mountain rock faces that can be highlighted when the paint is raked across the undulations of cold press paper. I find my style radically changes when I paint moving water or abstracts as it becomes more natural and fluid; so I like to vary my compositions. I also have an enduring appreciation for paintings of my mother Ruth, and Pierre Bonnard, who made quick sketches along with some brief notes and then painted from memory, one color a day, on a number of different canvasses tacked on the walls of his studios in France.
I currently reside in the Artspace Everett Lofts in the Creative District of Everett, Washington, and am also a Snohomish County Arts Commissioner representing District 2.
